A Little
History of the Cana-Vac Company:
A Legend Continues...
The year is 1970, disco is in full swing, bellbottoms are
the "in" thing and terrible color combinations for furniture
and appliances are considered "groovy". It was prior to this
time, that an innovative Leonard Budd former employee at
M.I.T. and NASA, saw a future with central vacuum systems.
Using his engineering background, Leonard designed and
employed his own concepts into his first central vacuum
system.
Like many
fledging businesses, Leonard began manufacturing out of his
garage, selling small quantities of his central vacuums
regionally in Guelph, Ontario. As popularity grew for his
product and as his market expanded, Leonard and his wife
Sylvia founded Budd Vacuum Co. and moved into their first
manufacturing facility in 1970.
Originally
called "Can-Vac", as Leonard named it, the unit was a steel
can with a motor hence "Can" and "Vac". However, this name
didn't seem very catchy, and later Leonard decided upon the
name "Cana-Vac" which is still used today.
The years
passed and Budd Vacuum grew and grew until Leonard had a
20,000 square foot facility built to house his continually
growing business. Regrettably however, as time marched on,
the aging owner, now in his latte 60's, no longer had the
drive necessary to keep sales growing and eventually down
sized to a 7,000 square foot facility.
Finally
Leonard, now in his late 70's, decided it was now time to
sell the business, and sold Budd vacuum Co. to long time
family friend and colleague David Lawrence in 1993 -- then
becoming Cana-Vac Systems Inc. Sadly however, Leonard passed
away a few months thereafter.
Under new
ownership and renewed vigor, it was time to rebuild
declining sales and rejuvenate the Cana-Vac product line.
Not an easy task as the early '90s marked a recession in the
economy coupled with increasing costs and average selling
prices for central vacuums dropping. The hay day of the '80s
had ended.
Manufacturing
from a 7,000 square foot facility in Guelph, Ontario, with
four employees, growth was challenging. Then in 1996 with
steady growth, Cana-Vac moved to a larger facility with
12,000 square feet to meet the demands of increased sales
growth.
Bursting at
the seams again three years later, Cana-Vac purchased a
40,000 square foot facility and made the move from Guelph,
where Cana-Vac had been manufactured for the last 29 years,
and moved to Owen Sound.
Now with
increased capacity the new millennium proved promising as
sales continued upward and Cana-Vac introduced more and more
innovative products.
Today,
Cana-Vac operates two separate manufacturing facilities
totaling 60,000 square feet and is family to some 49
employees.
